Summary

A deliciously funny, sharply observed debut of family, love, and class, this zeitgeisty novel follows three women in one rich New York clan

Darley, the eldest daughter in the closely-tied, carefully-guarded, old money Stockton family, made the classic feminine mistake and gave up her job for her children before she realized she'd sacrificed more of herself than she intended; Sasha married into the Stocktons, and finds herself the outsider looking into the fishbowl, wondering if she will ever understand their ways; and Georgianna, the baby of the family, has fallen in love with someone she can't (and really shouldn't) have, and must confront the kind of person she wants to be。

Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York's one percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit。 Full of recognizable, loveable if fallible characters (and a few appalling ones!), it's about the peculiar unknowability of someone else's family, the miles between the haves and have-nots and everything in between, and the insanity of first love--all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight of a read。

This was OK。 Read in a few days…nothing really happens - more of a “name check” of New York things。 Would be a good book for a long plane ride or beach day

I needed a break from intense historical fiction, and picked up Pineapple Street after having it recommended to me a few times。 A little family drama was all I needed to reset。Centering around the well-off Stockton family who own a large chunk of valuable Brooklyn Heights real estate, we follow the daughters of the family both born in and married in to see what life in their WASP-y part of New York is really like。Darley is the quintessential first born。 An overachiever who strives to be the best I needed a break from intense historical fiction, and picked up Pineapple Street after having it recommended to me a few times。 A little family drama was all I needed to reset。Centering around the well-off Stockton family who own a large chunk of valuable Brooklyn Heights real estate, we follow the daughters of the family both born in and married in to see what life in their WASP-y part of New York is really like。Darley is the quintessential first born。 An overachiever who strives to be the best in everything she does。 The problem is, she feels torn between taking on the role of stay-at-home mom, which sometimes she adores, and the need to succeed in the corporate world, which she occasionally misses。 She loves her husband and will do anything to keep their family on the right track including making personal and financial sacrifices, and keeping the occasional secret from the rest of her family。Sasha, who married into the family, is the “gold digger”or so everyone says behind her back。 Raised in a middle-class family from Rhode Island, she is a fish out of water in the Stockton clan。 Her bohemian ways are often misunderstood, and her in laws don’t know what to say to her。 When her husband’s sisters begin to confide in her, we will find out whether they choose to finally accept her into their family or continue to widen the wedge。Georgianna is the baby, and often acts like one。 Raised with everything she could possibly want, she is naïve as she attempts to navigate the real world working in a nonprofit。 When she thinks she has met the man of her dreams, he quickly opens her eyes to her privilege and she questions her whole life up until meeting him。 By the end of the book, this flat a character gains dimension。 There are no major catastrophes to deal with reading this book other than reading how other family dynamics play out。 The obvious attention to the haves vs the have-nots in this story makes the reader evaluate their standard of living。 As a first born and a member of the middle class, I identified with both Darley and Sasha—Georgianna had to grow on me。 Pineapple Street was exactly the lighter easier read I needed after too many gut-wrenching stories。 Http://www。instagram。com/passionforprose 。。。more

I loved the character development, I loved the story。 I was enthralled with this debut novel。

Meh。 Interesting premise, flat characters, and read like privileged white lady went to a DEI seminar and regurgitated talking points in narrative form。 The idea is interesting: what do you do when confronted with your wealth and privilege? But there was no plot, no connective tissue, and yawn/cringe to “issues” facing the 1% right now if not done with extreme care and amazing prose。

Erika

Poor rich people。 Their lives are so hard。🙄

I enjoyed this a lot。 I found it comforting and amusing。 Have to roll my eyes at the reviews that say "nothing happened" or "boring"。 I like a character driven book with good dialogue。 It wasn't Shakespeare, but it was about change and family, love and friendship。 I'm happy to read something where I don't have to worry about something terrible happening to the characters。 Life is hard enough。 I'll take escapism any day。 I enjoyed this a lot。 I found it comforting and amusing。 Have to roll my eyes at the reviews that say "nothing happened" or "boring"。 I like a character driven book with good dialogue。 It wasn't Shakespeare, but it was about change and family, love and friendship。 I'm happy to read something where I don't have to worry about something terrible happening to the characters。 Life is hard enough。 I'll take escapism any day。 。。。more

3。5 This is an easy novel to enjoy but it is filled with so many cliches about wealth and social class that the quality of the story suffers。

I truly did not enjoy this book。 The cover story lured me in for a good read but it felt more like a monotonous biography of 3 different women in the same family that I slowly became uninterested in reading about as I got deeper into the book。 Often times, I felt that I was reading celebrity gossip like in the tabloids。 There was no plot, characters were underdeveloped, and the story lacked any substance。 Tackling a story about the lives of the top 1% may be challenging but weaving a tale of int I truly did not enjoy this book。 The cover story lured me in for a good read but it felt more like a monotonous biography of 3 different women in the same family that I slowly became uninterested in reading about as I got deeper into the book。 Often times, I felt that I was reading celebrity gossip like in the tabloids。 There was no plot, characters were underdeveloped, and the story lacked any substance。 Tackling a story about the lives of the top 1% may be challenging but weaving a tale of interclass marriages could have great potential that this novel was unable to achieve。 。。。more

Pineapple StreetBy: Jenny Jackson🍍It is somewhat mind-blowing to me that I have not read an actual library book in many decades。 A friend mentioned to me that you can now search online for books at your library & reserve them! Who knew?! 🍍Reserved this wonderful debut novel & read it for free! What an interesting uber-wealthy family the Stocktons are! It was fun to read about their lives in alternating POV chapters。🍍Hard to believe that this is a debut novel。 Hoping for more from JJ! 🍍🍍🍍🍍

I just really enjoyed this! My favorite part is a conversation between Sasha and Cord in chapter 10 that made me laugh out loud。

I’m bewildered by all the positive reviews this lightweight novel has received, and can only conclude that it’s due to the author’s position and network in the publishing world。 It is certainly not due to the plot, characters or prose of the book itself, all of which are forgettable。 I lIve in Brooklyn Heights and would love to read a well-crafted work on modern wealth in my own neighborhood。 This, however, is more of an outline of a few ideas on some people who live and die by prenups (as if th I’m bewildered by all the positive reviews this lightweight novel has received, and can only conclude that it’s due to the author’s position and network in the publishing world。 It is certainly not due to the plot, characters or prose of the book itself, all of which are forgettable。 I lIve in Brooklyn Heights and would love to read a well-crafted work on modern wealth in my own neighborhood。 This, however, is more of an outline of a few ideas on some people who live and die by prenups (as if that’s the one interesting aspect of wealth), with specific Bk Heights locations peppered in throughout。 It’s really a shame; its splashy publication will probably crowd out a layered, insightful and well-written novel on wealth, the rationalizations of the wealthy, and the power money wields in current society。 Two stars rather than one because it’s a quick read, at least。 。。。more

What in the world was this and how much money was spent to put this book on “best of” lists? Granted, I am automatically predisposed not to like books about ultra rich, but this one didn’t even have a point。 Rich people have all advantages in the world, and one of them sort of tries to break the mold by becoming a white savior。 Why did I read this?

I really thought I’d enjoy this book as I love novels set in NYC, my “hometown。” I also thought it would have insightful commentary on class, particularly as it plays out in NY。 I was disappointed to find that while the book found fault with crazy inherited insane wealth (think billionaires) it was so far from the reality of my life that it was pointless。 Most people would agree that people who have no idea how much money they have, who never have to work if they don’t want to, who can buy or do I really thought I’d enjoy this book as I love novels set in NYC, my “hometown。” I also thought it would have insightful commentary on class, particularly as it plays out in NY。 I was disappointed to find that while the book found fault with crazy inherited insane wealth (think billionaires) it was so far from the reality of my life that it was pointless。 Most people would agree that people who have no idea how much money they have, who never have to work if they don’t want to, who can buy or do anything they want, have more than their share of the wealth。 However, the people in the book who are disadvantaged still earn six figure salaries, at the least。 Give me a break。 The only thing the book made me do is hate the author, who is a good writing but is crazy wealthy herself ( although I’m sure she doesn’t think that’s the case)。 。。。more

4 stars for the witty writing and concept, but ,for the lack of depth, 3 stars seems reasonable。(Below is a repeat of my reading updates - I didn’t feel like elaborating)This was entertaining but quite pointless。 But I have to say that the writing is quite good, especially the humour。I will take this one as a good break from crime fiction or heavy topics。This is an easy and fast read。But seriously, there is nothing remarkable about this book。The ending was very unsatisfying。The audiobook is an e 4 stars for the witty writing and concept, but ,for the lack of depth, 3 stars seems reasonable。(Below is a repeat of my reading updates - I didn’t feel like elaborating)This was entertaining but quite pointless。 But I have to say that the writing is quite good, especially the humour。I will take this one as a good break from crime fiction or heavy topics。This is an easy and fast read。But seriously, there is nothing remarkable about this book。The ending was very unsatisfying。The audiobook is an excellent option, but I decided to stick to the book, as I read faster and I did not want to ruin a perfect narration by speeding up。The author happens to be the vice-president and executive editor of Knopf Doubleday and this is her first novel。Hardcover: 303 pagesEbook (Kobo): 274 pages (default), 85k wordsAudiobook narrated by Marin Ireland: 8。5 hours (normal speed) 。。。more

All fluff no stuff。 This is a book about a family of 1% and their problems。 I didn’t really like any of the characters except “the poor person” who married into wealth。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I liked this book very much but I felt the ending was rushed。 I thought the book was headed for a sequel after the fire but it just ended abruptly! That was a big disappointment。The character development was wonderful I felt I knew each character or know of someone like that。 I wouldn’t have minded a sequel!

this is very gossip girl reboot vibe。 the rich and the privileged cosplay at being woke。 i finished this book in one sitting and i thought it was really well written for the author’s first book! i really love vivid descriptions of brooklyn heights and new york overall。 the dialogue was sharp, the social events vivid。 this was fast paced and i felt like the characters were interesting enough where i was intrigued about what happens next。while the book attempted to cover really significant topics, this is very gossip girl reboot vibe。 the rich and the privileged cosplay at being woke。 i finished this book in one sitting and i thought it was really well written for the author’s first book! i really love vivid descriptions of brooklyn heights and new york overall。 the dialogue was sharp, the social events vivid。 this was fast paced and i felt like the characters were interesting enough where i was intrigued about what happens next。while the book attempted to cover really significant topics, such as white privilege, gentrification, and generational wealth…it really fell a little short for me? the ending felt a little too weak and a little too white savior-like。 i really can’t explain it, but it felt like watching a mr。 beast video where, yeah, he’s doing good in the world but he’s doing it for clout。 my biggest criticism of the book lies in the character georgiana。 at first, i thought the author was a genius for creating a character who is intentionally so unlikable and un-relatable because she’s so privileged and lives in a bubble。 at first, that’s tolerable because the author is obviously creating a character to illustrate the hypocrisy of a grown rich woman who views herself as well-traveled, but doesn’t know that UAE is a country。 my favorite parts of the book is when she is getting dragged for being spoiled and privileged。 for me, her character development and her coming to terms with her privilege was not explored enough。 her desire to change and her inner struggle with her privileged was not sufficiently demonstrated。 it’s almost unfair that this story is told through her lens。 。。。more
